Art 4 Kids

Fun Projects for Kids!

Who wouldn't want to sling paint all over a large canvas?  Jackson Pollock once did and became famous for his large works of art.  Students learned about this famous artist and were then able to create a large piece of art in the style of Jackson Pollock.  Two kindergarten classes took turns putting on a black garbage bag (as a paint smock-- holes cut in for arms and head).

You can create this same type of project at home with a few supplies from the craft store... or from around the house.   You can decide whether to make a large version or a small version.  If doing the small version, put the paper down inside a box or plastic container to keep the paint from getting everywhere.  If doing the large version I would recommend putting a plastic tarp down or doing it outside.

*  paper or canvas (use canvas if wanting to keep or hang up)
*  paint (use acrylic paint or tempra-washable)
*  paint brushes or craft sticks- one for each color of paint
*  paint smock or garbage bag

Put the canvas or paper down (secure edges).  Take the lid off the paint bottles and set aside.  Dip the brush or craft stick down inside and load it with paint.  Then fling the brush/craft stick  over the paper/canvas.  There will be large splats and drip-drops all over.  That is the look you want to achieve.

You can layer the different colors without letting them dry in-between, as long as you don't touch the paint.  The more colors the better because it will cover the background more.  Using at least one metallic is also encouraged; not only does it look cool but Jackson Pollock used metallics in his works.  Find out more about his life at the sites below.  Parents might want to view first to ensure the content is appropriate.
